Suzy’s experience of a one-to-one brand coaching session

Suzy is a freelance writer who is passionate about helping business owners find their voice online. Suzy has kindly shared her experience of a coaching session with me.

Until relatively recently, I thought branding in business referred to a logo, colours, and fonts (sorry Fliss!). So, I hadn’t thought I needed any help with mine as I’d got all the pretty bits sorted. It wasn’t until I had a virtual brew with Fliss that I realised that branding is about way more than that. And that actually, I needed a bit of support to make sure mine was in order and aligned with my values and everything else about me and my business.

So, I booked a one-to-one coaching session to brainstorm some ideas and get clarity about my biggest block.

No sweatbands needed

I have to say that connecting with Fliss has opened my eyes to a lot of things relating to business. Until that point, my only contact with a coach had been in a sporting context so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I can confirm, however, that there was no requirement for sportswear to be worn or any physical exertion during our session!

Before the session, Fliss asked me what area I’d like to focus on so that she could prepare and make sure I got as much as possible from our 90-minute session.

My pain point

I’m a freelance copywriter and I’ve always had a clear idea of who my ideal client is (small business owners who either want to learn how to write for their business or don’t enjoy writing or don’t have time and want me to do it for them). My problem has been finding where they hang out. So, I explained to Fliss that this is the area I wanted to focus on.

I knew that working out how to connect with my ideal client is a big topic to cover and we wouldn’t get to the bottom of it in one session. But I hoped that talking all of it through would give me clarity about the places they hang out and how I can connect with them. I guess I wanted to make sure I wasn’t looking in completely the wrong places.

Our session took place via Google Meet. I hadn’t used Google for a virtual call before but found it easy to use.

I have to say I was quite nervous about the session. I’m not sure why. But imposter syndrome has played a big part in my life since I became self-employed just over a year ago, and sometimes it gets the better of me.

The session

I needn’t have worried as Fliss put me at ease straight away. The session was very informal and felt more like a chat with a friend than me being grilled about the ins and outs of my business.

We started with the basics, talking about who my ideal clients are and exactly how my services help them to solve the problems they have. And then as the conversation progressed, we looked at this in more detail honing in on what their pain points are, how my services take them away, the things I do now to connect with them, and we finished up looking at all of the different ways we could connect.

The ninety-minute session went very quickly and I really enjoyed it. It reassured me that I was doing a lot of the right things and that I did actually know quite a lot about my ideal client and how my services can help them. There were a few lightbulb moments, particularly when I realised that there is actually a real world outside and that sometimes, meeting people in person is a great way of connecting and networking, rather than sticking to social media.

We ended the session with some homework for me to do in terms of thinking about my messaging, different types of partnerships that would be a good fit for my business, and clarity on the message I need to get out about how my services solve my ideal client’s pain point.

I really enjoyed the session and got a lot from it. I feel that I’ve got more tools now to use to help share the right messaging to connect with the people I want to do business with. And I feel more confident in what I’m doing.

Go for it!

If there’s a part of your branding you’re struggling with, whether that’s marketing, your messaging, your ideal client, or something else, I’d recommend a one-to-one coaching session with Fliss. She’s very calming and brilliant at showing you how much you already know and guiding you toward the answers you need to grow your business.

Book a virtual brew with me to chat about how brand coaching can support you and your business to share your message and level up.
